Isiolo: Crafts in the town, nature in the county
Accommodation in Isiolo
Isiolo can be viewed on two scales: the town center has an informal Jua-kali sector, while protected areas and wildlife belong to the broader context of Isiolo County and northern Kenya. When choosing a destination, this distinction helps separate the town’s cultural character from the natural setting of the surrounding area. The two perspectives complement each other, but describe different levels.
Crafts and handicrafts
Isiolo’s center has an informal Jua-kali sector. This includes blacksmiths, known as Tum tum, as well as tailoring, embroidery, artifacts, and basketry. The range encompasses metalwork, textile work, and basketry; it offers a tangible cultural connection to the town and showcases several aspects of craftsmanship rather than just one type of craft.
Small markets and shops in and around Isiolo and Archers Post sell local handicrafts. In Isiolo, Somali bracelets and daggers, as well as pieces made from Ethiopian silver jewelry, are available. The locations differ: sales outlets are in and around Isiolo and in Archers Post, while the goods mentioned are available in Isiolo. Together, the town center’s connection to craftsmanship and the wider trading context complement each other.
Nature in Isiolo County and the surrounding area
At the level of the wider destination, Isiolo, the focus shifts from the town center to the county. The Isiolo County Plan 2018–2022 names three wildlife reserves: Shaba, Buffalo Springs, and Bisanadi. The same plan also lists five conservancies supported by NRT: Nakupratt-Gotu, Leparua, Biliqo-Bulesa, Nasulu, and Oldonyiro Community Conservancy. The plan describes these five conservancies as wildlife corridors and migration areas. Thus, the county context brings together named reserves and conservancies with an explicitly stated ecological function.
The County Plan 2018–2022 names African wild dogs, elephants, and lions in Isiolo, as well as more than 300 bird species. According to the same plan, parks and wildlife reserves in the county include flora and fauna, including endemic species. These details give the regional nature theme both an animal and a plant perspective; they differ from the town center’s more specific connection to craftsmanship.
In the destination’s surrounding area, in northern Kenya north of the Tana River, Grevy’s zebras, Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffes, and blue-necked Somali ostriches are found. The river landscape offers a different perspective: in two reserves, springs and swamps feed the Uaso Nyiro and provide surface water; doum palms, riparian forest, and thickets shape the landscape along the river.
The wildlife information relates to two geographic levels: the County Plan’s species list concerns Isiolo County, while the additional species are found in the surrounding area north of the Tana River. This distinction helps separate countywide information from species found in the wider surrounding area.
Two scales to consider when planning your trip
This provides a clear guide for planning your trip: craftsmanship is specifically rooted in Isiolo’s center, while the nature themes mainly concern the county and the surrounding area. This makes it easier to decide whether to explore the town for its cultural character or focus your trip on the wider landscape.
