Hills, Valleys and Waterfalls

The Volta Region is characterized by rolling hills, valleys, lakes and waterfalls. For geographical orientation: it borders Lake Volta to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Togo to the west, and the Oti Region to the north. In the southern part of Kyabobo National Park, steep hills rise up, offering views in every direction. The park is a destination for mountain climbing and cycling; its tourist infrastructure is developing. Check locally for current conditions.

Wli Falls is considered Ghana’s highest waterfall and, together with Tsatsadu Falls and Tagbo Falls, is one of the Volta Region’s natural attractions. At the Amedzofe waterfalls, the season plays an important role in water flow: water levels are highest from May to November. Between January and March, the water volume can drop significantly or dry up completely. Seasonal conditions can vary from year to year.

Mountain Hikes and Trails from Amedzofe

The steep climb up Mt Afajato is made with a guide and takes 2.5 hours. In clear weather, it offers a view; visibility is usually poor during the Harmattan season from November to March. From Amedzofe, you can hike up Mt. Gemi and to a waterfall in the valley. A four-meter-high cross erected by German missionaries in the 1930s stands on Mt. Gemi.

The guided ascent of Mt Afajato takes 2.5 hours; hikes from Amedzofe lead up Mt. Gemi and to a waterfall in the valley. Visibility on Mt Afajato and water flow at the Amedzofe waterfalls also vary by season. These details can help you weigh your planned nature experiences against your travel dates.

Kente Craft and Festivals

At the covered, open-air Kente weaving center in Kpetoe, up to 25 weavers work and display their products. Work practices may vary from day to day. The same town hosts the week-long Kente festival Agbamevo Za every August. The program includes speed-weaving contests and Kente clothing design competitions. Check the current dates with the Ghana Tourism Authority.

The region’s festivals also have different focuses: the Anlo Hogbetsotso Festival is celebrated in November and commemorates the migration of the Anlo Ewe. The Asogli Yam Festival is a harvest festival celebrated in September. Together, these festivals offer insight into different cultural occasions, while the weaving center provides a direct connection to Kente craft.

River, Lake and Guided Visits

The Volta River and Lake Volta offer opportunities for music cruises and canoe trips. If you are interested in a guided visit to the Tafi-Atome Monkey Sanctuary, you can arrange a tour at the visitor center; a guide will then lead you into the sanctuary. Check current visiting conditions before you travel. With a sanctuary guide, you can also explore the village and observe food preparation and other everyday activities. This way, the visit combines the sanctuary with a glimpse into village life.
