Accommodation in Abu Ghusun
The tourism center of Abu Ghusun lies on the Red Sea coast south of Marsa Alam and within the administrative boundaries of Red Sea Governorate. Abu Ghusun is also located in Wadi El Gemal Reserve.
Coast, reserve and highlands
There is a less-visited beach near Abu Ghusun in Wadi El Gemal National Park. Abu Ghusun’s landscape is characterized by rugged highlands, abundant medicinal plants and diverse wildlife. This means the landscape description extends beyond the beach: the highlands, plant life and wildlife offer their own connection with nature. If you consider nature and mountain themes as well as the coast when choosing a location, this distinction is helpful.
On mountain safari experiences in Abu Ghusun, visitors can explore remote areas and climb peaks with knowledgeable local guides. The combination of local guidance and exploring the highlands gives this experience a different focus from the beach. For your trip, you can therefore first consider whether you are more interested in the coastal and natural environment or in guided explorations of the highlands.
Ababda crafts and cultural heritage
The Abu Ghusoun Handicrafts Center supports the production and marketing of local Ababda handicrafts. The ongoing project includes a storage area, three workshops, an exhibition area and an exhibition tent. The center is intended for the general public and people interested in locally made handicrafts. In addition, the program to preserve Ababda heritage focuses on customary law and passing tribal knowledge, traditions and customs on to younger generations. Material craftwork and the transmission of knowledge and customs thus stand alongside one another as distinct cultural topics.
Dive site and Hamada wreck
The cargo ship Hamada was 65 meters long, carried polyethylene pellets on the route from Jeddah to Suez, sank in 1993 and ran aground on Abu Ghusoun Reef. The wreck lies on its starboard side in two sections at a depth of 5 to 18 meters. Parts of the wreck lie in shallow enough water for snorkeling. The maritime points of interest are therefore distinct: the route, cargo and sinking tell the story of the cargo ship; the position, sections and depth describe the shape of the wreck underwater.
In Wadi El Gemal National Park, Abu Ghusun is a dive site accessible from the beach. Specific conditions and the availability of operators may vary; check these details before planning. This allows you to consider the historical information about the Hamada separately from the diving or snorkeling options when making your travel decision.
