Discover Arta: elevation, beach and Peace Walk
Accommodation in Arta
Arta between elevation and region
The town of Arta is the capital of the region of the same name and lies at an elevation of 750 metres on a small mountain. You can therefore start by choosing what you want to focus on: the town itself, beach activities or landscapes across the region. This distinction gives you a clear framework before comparing hotels.
Beach activities and season
Arta Beach is suitable for scuba diving and fishing; night dives can also be arranged there. Whale shark diving is offered from November to March. If this activity is what determines your travel plans, schedule your trip within this period and confirm the current local arrangements in advance. This gives you a specific seasonal timeframe for planning a beach-focused stay.
The Arta Peace Walk
The Arta Peace Walk is a major annual march attended by people from across Djibouti. A report dated 28 November 2021 on the 15th edition mentions routes of 5 and 15 kilometres, with water stations along the routes. The specific details about route lengths and water stations apply to that edition; if the march is the reason for your trip, check the date of the relevant edition in advance.
Attractions in the Arta region
The Canyon de Dimbiya Adaïle is considered one of the major tourist attractions in the Arta region. It is therefore associated with the region and is distinct from activities directly at Arta Beach. If landscapes are a priority for you, you can consider the canyon as a separate reason to travel; if you are coming for diving, fishing or night dives, focus on the beach. This distinction helps you decide what to prioritise on your trip without conflating different places and activities.
Djibouti as a broader travel destination
Beyond the focus on Arta, the wider destination of Djibouti offers other landscapes and cultural and historical themes. The city of Djibouti was established around 1886 to 1900. Aburma is considered East Africa's most important rock art site and contains additional, more complex prehistoric rock art. In addition to Arta's beach activities, Djibouti also offers a historical perspective on the country.
Djibouti's landscapes also vary considerably. The coral reefs near Moucha attract numerous fish, including clownfish and snakefish. The Godoria mangrove forest consists of a maze of channels and mangrove roots, home to numerous animal and plant species. At Goubet Al-Kharab, Île du Diable rises above a bay: this dome-shaped formation was created by tectonic movements associated with the formation of the Assal Rift. The Djalelo Valley is considered an area with a particularly high concentration of gerenuks, also known as giraffe gazelles.
