Yaoundé offers several themes to consider when planning a trip: monumental architecture, outdoor activities, and nature and wildlife observation. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, it helps to consider which of these interests you want to shape your days. The places differ in character—from a national symbol to specific sports facilities and a peaceful canoe ride.

Culture and Architecture

The Monument de la Réunification in Yaoundé was officially inaugurated in 1974 and is 21 metres tall. It was created by French architect Salomon, Cameroonian sculptor Gédéon Mpando and Jesuit priest Engelbert Mveng. Its architecture, sculpture and historic inauguration offer several concrete points of interest for culture-focused trip planning.

The cone symbolises the unity towards which all the children of Cameroon are running; the black, white and red mosaic refers to Cameroon’s traditions. The cone and mosaic thus represent two distinct ideas: national unity and cultural tradition.

The Monument Patriote in Yaoundé takes a different design approach: it consists of two fibreglass arches and a map of Cameroon held by two hands. Comparing the monuments reveals distinct visual motifs: a cone and mosaic in one, arches, hands and a map in the other.

Sport and Recreation at Parcours Vita

Parcours Vita in Yaoundé is a public area for sport and recreation. It is 1.6 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 108 metres. Its length and elevation difference describe two aspects: its extent and its elevation profile. Together, they provide a concrete guide when assessing the scale of the activities on offer for your trip planning.

Parcours Vita also has a 200-metre-long walking trail with exercise stations, as well as a separate area for children. Other facilities include a concrete multi-purpose sports court with stands, a tennis court, a basketball area and a football pitch. The range extends from a walking trail with exercise stations to several sports facilities.

The fruit market at Parcours Vita sells fruit and vegetables, as well as prepared salads and fruit juices. For trip planning, this is a different aspect of the place from its walking trail and sports facilities: a specific market offering food.

Water, Animals and Gardens

The Ecopark Yaoundé offers peaceful canoe rides on the water in a natural setting. Visitors can observe mammals, birds and reptiles at the Ecopark zoo. The difference between the two activities is clear: the canoe ride centres on peaceful movement on the water, while the zoo offers the chance to observe different groups of animals.

Bois Sainte Anastasie has several botanical gardens, including one called “jardin des amours”. If botanical grounds are among your travel interests, this is another specific facet of Yaoundé’s natural setting.

Another Historical Perspective in the Centre Region

Another historical point of interest in the Centre Region is the Tunnels ferroviaires de Njock. They consist of three tunnels hand-carved into a rock massif called Liaa and are considered a striking testament to forced labour and the system of slavery organised in Cameroon. This regional historical perspective offers a different emphasis from the symbolism of unity represented by the Monument de la Réunification in Yaoundé.
