Atakora showcases the different sides of the Atacora Department: waterfalls and green landscapes, traditional earthen buildings, a regional museum and markets in the commune of Boukoumbé. These places offer a variety of themes to help you plan your trip. In Natitingou, the museum and architecture sit alongside the Kota waterfalls; in Boukoumbé and the surrounding villages, Tata buildings and markets offer further insights into the region.

Museum and Architecture in Natitingou

The Musée Régional de Natitingou opened in 1991 in the former office of the commander of the Atacora district. It houses more than 360 objects relating to the history, archaeology and traditions of the region’s peoples. The collection offers a historical and cultural focus distinct from Atakora’s natural attractions and markets.

The Tata Somba de Perma also showcase the region’s architecture. This group of traditional fortified earthen buildings is characteristic of Otammari architecture and is located in the rural district of Perma in the commune of Natitingou. Kouporgou, an Otammari village in the commune of Boukoumbé, combines its own traditional market with a well-preserved group of Tata homes. Koussoucoingou is another cultural and scenic facet of the Atacora Department, known for its Tata Somba buildings and panoramic views.

Tata Experience in Boukoumbé

In Boukoumbé, the Tata touristique combines a traditional architectural style with accommodation: this ecotourism facility is housed in a Tata, where visitors can spend a night in a typical dwelling of Somba country. If you want to include this experience in your plans, confirm availability in advance. This helps distinguish this special offering from a visit to the Tata buildings, which focuses primarily on architecture and cultural heritage.

Waterfalls in Green Surroundings

The Chutes de Kota are a series of waterfalls in the village of Kota, in the Kotopounga district of the commune of Natitingou. They are located east of the Atacora mountain range amid green surroundings. The Chutes de Tanougou are also in northwestern Benin: waterfalls in the village of Tanougou in the Atacora Department. Both names refer to waterfalls, but the places described differ in location. Kota is a village in the commune of Natitingou; Tanougou is in the northwest of the country.

Pendjari in a Cross-Border Context

The Parc National de la Pendjari is one of the Atacora Department’s tourist attractions. In Benin, it is part of the transboundary W-Arly-Pendjari complex. The complex also includes the W Regional Park, jointly managed by Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger, as well as Parc National d’Arly in Burkina Faso. It also encompasses the Koakrana and Kourtiagou hunting zones in Burkina Faso, and Konkombri and Mékrou in Benin. This context shows that Pendjari is part of a larger protected-area complex that extends across national borders.

Markets and Regional Daily Life

The markets offer a different perspective on Atakora from the museum, waterfalls and Tata buildings. The Grand Marché de Boukoumbé Centre is the main market in the commune and an economic hub where farmers, craftspeople and traders come together. The Marché de Manta is one of the four active traditional markets in the commune of Boukoumbé. Agricultural produce and handicrafts are sold there.

Markets are also part of the townscape in smaller places: Kouporgou is a village in the commune of Boukoumbé with its own traditional weekly market. The Marché de Korontière is a traditional rural market in the same commune and a stop on the road between Natitingou and Boukoumbé. The different roles of these markets help put the places in context: the market in central Boukoumbé is the commune’s main market, while village markets complement the local offering.
