Bejaia combines a long urban history with a coastal landscape shaped by Cap Carbon and Gouraya National Park. The city is one of Algeria’s oldest and was founded by Emperor Augustus in 26–27 BC under the name Saldae. This provides a clear thematic choice for planning your trip: you can focus on the city’s historical connections or on the natural and coastal features that are part of its natural heritage.

Coast and nature around Bejaia

The natural heritage in the city center includes the Corniche du Cap Carbon and Gouraya National Park. The park was recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve in 2004. Cap Carbon is less than five kilometers from the city center and is part of the national park. It is home to one of the highest sea cliffs in the Mediterranean. The islet is connected to the coast by a small alluvial isthmus; a path leads to its lighthouse, built at an elevation of 220 meters. Cap Carbon thus combines striking coastal formations with a specific destination along the way.

There is also a 19th-century lighthouse on the summit of Cap Carbon. Pic des Singes is also located in the national park. Its name comes from the Barbary macaques that live there in the wild. The two sites offer different points of interest: the sea cliff and lighthouse define the view at Cap Carbon, while the name Pic des Singes refers to the park’s wildlife.

City history and getting around

If you are looking for a way to explore the city’s history as well as its landscape, the Musée Bordj Moussa is a specific stop to include in your plans. It can be reached from central Béjaïa by car, taxi, or on foot. These three options offer different ways to include a museum visit in your stay. No information about opening hours or current visiting conditions is provided here.

A spring and coastal excursions

Les Aiguades offers a different natural feature from the sea cliff: this natural freshwater spring is close to the sea and a few kilometers from the city center. It has been known for the purity and freshness of its water since Roman times. For trip planning, this makes it possible to distinguish between two different themes: a spring with historical connections and a coastal landscape with striking rocks and a lighthouse.

Boat excursions depart from Port Tala Ilef on the Béjaïa coast. Destinations include Nizla Island, the caves, and Cap Carbon. These destinations are quite different, so you can take their distinct features into account when planning: island, caves, or cape. No timetable is provided here; check excursion times for specific dates.

The wider natural setting of Vgayeth

In the wider destination of Vgayeth, Gouraya National Park offers another perspective on the region. The park is located in the Wilaya de Béjaïa, was established in 1984, and has been a UNESCO MAB biosphere reserve since 2004. A total of 2,431 species have been recorded in the park: 1,429 animal species and 1,002 plant species. The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is considered the park’s most notable animal; the Sentier Lemercier runs through its habitat. In addition to coastal formations, the region offers wildlife and plant life, as well as a trail through the macaques’ habitat.

The region’s natural landscape also includes a 2.5-hectare urban wetland in Gouraya National Park, which serves as a refuge for waterbirds. The Cascade de Kefrida is an example of the waterfalls in the Wilaya de Béjaïa that contribute to mountain tourism. These features broaden the view beyond the city: they are part of the wider natural setting of Vgayeth and are distinct from the sites described in Bejaia.
