The Hammam Guergour thermal spring emerges in the form of spring outlets along the banks of the Oued Bousselam. The Romans discovered it in the 1st century AD, named it “ADSAFA” after the river’s name at the time, and built baths there supplied by conduits. In the 12th century, the Roman baths were renovated and named “Hammam Djoudi.” Thus, the history of the area brings together two clearly distinct periods: the Roman complex and its later renovation. For planning your trip, this sequence offers a concrete way into the history of Hammam Guergour; at the same time, it sets the area apart from the province’s other cultural and landscape themes.

Hiking above Guergour

Hikes take place in the mountain ranges above the village of Guergour. This offers a different focus alongside the cultural themes: exploring a mountain landscape on foot. When planning your trip, you can decide whether history or hiking should shape your days more.

Culture in Sétif

The Ain El Fouara fountain in the city of Sétif was restored in 1998 after vandalism and added to the national list of monuments. Associated with the Sétif Museum is a Bacchus mosaic featuring a giraffe; it is considered extremely rare and possibly unique. The two subjects offer culture enthusiasts different points of interest: the fountain highlights restoration and its listing as a monument, while the mosaic draws attention to the giraffe motif.

A craft in its regional context

The Guergour carpet is still woven within the family. In contrast to the fountain’s restoration, dated to 1998, the focus here is on a weaving practice that continues within the family.

Algeria in a wider context

In the wider travel destination of Algeria, you will find other landscape and cultural heritage themes. Tassili n’Ajjer is a plateau of 72,000 km² in southeastern Algeria, on the borders with Libya, Niger and Mali. Tourism there is strictly controlled, and visitor groups are always accompanied by an official guide. If you include Tassili n’Ajjer in your travel plans, confirm the current regulations with the local authorities before your trip.

Tipasa lies on the Mediterranean, 70 km west of Algiers. The serial World Heritage site of Tipasa comprises three sites: two archaeological parks near the present-day urban area and the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania on the western Algiers Sahel plateau, 11 km southeast of Tipasa. An ancient Punic trading post, Tipasa was conquered by Rome and used as a strategic base for the conquest of the kingdoms of Mauretania. In Algiers, the traditional urban fabric of the Casbah is associated with a strong sense of community and developed through the interaction of different population groups.

The monumental remains of Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad also lie within partially eroded fortification walls that extend over 7 km. Timgad is located on the northern slopes of the Aurès Mountains.
